Pinchers Mastered

Well, probably not "mastered", but our little guy is able to self-feed. Here he is grasping a piece of baby-version french toast. He doesn't get it in the mouth 100% of time (maybe 50/50), but he's able to grasp small pieces of food and put them in his mouth. Ah, the lessons in feeding continue...

8 months

So, this post is a few days late. Gavin turned 8 months old on Sunday. Not that this milestone was overshadowed by the half-marathon, but I just couldn't rally the energy for another post on Sunday. I know, I'm a bad mom. Just today, I'm finally starting to feel back to normal after that exhausting run.

So, back to the topic of the post...eight months, holy cow! Gavin has developed so much in the past month. He's not crawling yet, but he takes lunges forward from sitting to reach toys, twists all around, easily pulls up from sitting. And he wants to crawl, I can see it in his eyes. I think it might be another month or so until he does. A little late, but no big deal.

He does very well in restaurant high chairs now -- no more slumping and sliding down. He is eating some "real" foods, like little pieces of bread, those little baby puff snacks, small bites of boneless white fish, egg yolks, cottage cheese (not his favorite yet). His appetite in general for solid foods has improved significantly. He practically inhales cereals (rice, barley, oatmeal). What used to take 40 minutes to feed him now takes just 5 minutes or so. His favorites are bananas, peaches, applesauce and sweet potatoes. He still has his days that solids just aren't his thing. And he hasn't quite mastered the pincher finger thing yet, so not much self-feeding at this point. But we keep giving him opportunities to learn. Still just two teeth, but acting at times like more are on the way.

We took him for his seasonal flu shot on Monday. On Tuesday, he had a low grade fever and bit of a runny nose. I'm never one to say that the flu shot can give you the flu, but I do think it can cause a slight flu-like reaction. He seems fine other than the runny nose, so I'm not concerned. I'm just praying that he stays healthy this fall/winter. Frightening how quickly H1N1 is peaking, with no vaccine available thus far...and people say they want government run health care? Oh, wait, sorry, this isn't a political blog. I'll bite my tongue.

So, life with an eight month old is so much fun. It is so delightful to see him giggle at silly things. Pure innocence and I'm loving it!

Eat Our Dust!

We did it! Post-baby goal accomplished. It was a very chilly start to the morning, but Brad and I both did very well in the GR Half Marathon this morning. Brad finished 13th overall and second in his age group with a time of 1:23:50. I achieved both of my goals: 1. Just finish the race and 2. my secret personal goal of finishing in under 2 hours. My time was 1:58:35. I must say, I'm very happy with that.

Here we all are early this AM pre-race. Grandma Mary and Grandpa Fred were gracious enough to watch Gavin and then came downtown in time to watch us finish the race (after it warmed up a bit).

And here's Brad enjoying some post-race Culver's custard before I finished. Nothing like frozen custard when it is 30 degrees outside! I saved mine to eat tonight...it's calling my name from the freezer as I type away.

Again, I hate pictures of myself running, but here I am just in front of the finish line. I was fortunate enough to actually see and hear my cheering crowd, so I smiled for the camera.

And finally, the post-race pic. What a great feeling of accomplishment!

And now I will be taking a one week hiatus from running...ahhhhh!

Punkies

Today we took our annual trip to Morse Farms (Brad's Aunt and Uncle's farm) for pumpkins. Only this year, we got to bring our own little pumpkin along! Gavin liked the pumpkins, but was more fascinated with the grass and leaves on the ground around him. Hence, no good pictures of him looking at the camera. Here's a sampling of my favorites, though...

Big Marathon Freeze

We were in Chicago this weekend for the Marathon. No, we didn't run this year, just stood on the sidelines and watched...how nice! And cold! Quite the contrast to the weather two years ago when Brad ran...90 degrees and humid! It was in the upper 30's for the run this year.

Gavin stayed nice and toasty in his stroller and 18 layers of clothes (yes, I exaggerate...slightly). Brad and I, however, were a bit under-dressed for the chilly morning.

We watched all the elite men and women runners cross the finish. Here's winner Sammy Wanjiru as he sets a course record. He was on pace earlier in the race for a world record, but didn't quite pull it off.

And here's the after marathon event -- warming up! Nothing cuter than a baby covered in white blankets, huh?

And that was our weekend! We have our big run this coming weekend. All that training for one big day. More to come later on how it goes...pray that we have a safe, fun run on Sunday!

The Incredible Edible Egg

We're advancing in the world of food textures and ventured into egg yolks tonight. A big hit, mainly, I think, because they don't have a very strong taste. Just fun texture to gum. And don't you just love this little innocent grin....I do!

Casting Call!

So, every mom, of course, thinks her child(ren) is the cutest, right? To that end, I've entered Gavin into the "babyGap Casting Call". They have an annual photo contest searching for their next baby models. We love Gap, so I thought it would be fun to enter Gavin, with no expectations that he will win. But who knows, maybe he will?

Part of the contest is also "fan favorite" voting. If you'd like to enter a vote for one of Gavin's five photos, check out this site. You can search the following contestant IDs to see his photo and vote. And you can vote once per day, so keep them coming! Or, you can enter your own baby/child in the contest on this site, if you're interested.

Gavin's contestant ID numbers are:

  • 923731579
  • 343731149
  • 343731689
