5 Years!

Brad and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary yesterday. With many thanks to the babysitting services of Grandma Mary and Grandpa Fred, we were able to make it out for a lovely dinner at Red's in Rockford. Fantastic food and wonderful company! Cheers to the next five and beyond!

(pardon the grainy scanned photo -- amazing how far digital photography has come in the past 5 years, too)

Back to Racing

My first official long distance race post-baby. Brad and I ran the "Bridge Run" downtown on Sunday morning -- a 10 mile race. We're both training for the GR Half Marathon next month, so this 10 miler was a great training opportunity. I have to say, I was a bit nervous going into it...but it felt good in a way to have that feeling back. Nervous because it is a race and that in itself creates butterflies in my stomach. But also nervous because I've been struggling a bit with hip pain for the past several months. I had a really bad 10 mile run 2 weeks ago (non-race) and was worried I might repeat myself on Sunday.

I must say, it was AWESOME to get back into racing. I'm not as fast as I used to be (not that I was all that fast before), but I far exceeded my expectations on Sunday. I ran 8:49 minute miles...I thought I'd be closer to 9:30-10:00 per mile. And I felt wonderful the whole run -- and a little competitive, too. It was a nice cool morning that led way to beautiful sunny skies. Couldn't have asked for better conditions.

I did come out of the run with three blisters -- which have been a chronic problem for me all of my running days. I'll spare the details, but I did lose a toe nail post-race. Again, no details. But I suppose you're not a true runner unless you've sacrificed a few toenails. Thank goodness we're pretty much through sandal season for the year!

While I have always hated pictures of me running, I thought I'd post a couple from the race. I like this one of me because I've just passed Brad's physical therapist who is an avid runner. That's him in the red. Sorry to leave you in my dust Terrence! To his credit, he was running as part of a volunteer group who take special needs children through the race. What a wonderful way to volunteer! Go team Lauren!

And here's my ultra speedy husband. I liked this photo because you can see two of the ArtPrize entries in the background. The route was full of entries and running the race was a very cool way to view them. Brad ended up finishing 21st overall (out of about 600 runners). But 10 miles is nothing to him...just a little walk in the park!

While we were racing, Gavin was enjoying time with Grandma Mary and Grandpa Fred -- thanks to you both for getting up extra early on a Sunday...and for taking our little guy to church with you. He told me (in babble) that he had a wonderful morning with you both!

So, cheers to racing again...and getting all of these miles in each week while working full time, breastfeeding and just being a mom and wife. It's a lot of work (and calories consumed), but very fulfilling!

Firefighter Appreciation

My brother, Tim, who is a firefighter for Wright-Tallmadge Township, invited us to attend the township's firehouse open house. We thought it would be fun for Gavin to see Uncle Tim in action. So, we dressed him in his fire engine shirt and off we went.

Here are Uncle Tim and Gavin sitting on the big fire engine.

I think it will be even more fun in years to come, as Gavin gets older. And as all little boys do, I'm sure he'll develop a true love for "big trucks" and all of the firefighter heros out there.

Here's Uncle Tim using the "jaws of life" in a simulated car crash. They even had AeroMed fly in to demonstrate a medical emergency. We missed all of the helicopter action (during nap time),but it was great to see all of the wonderful work these men and women do every day to keep the public safe.

A big thank you to all of you hard working soles who repeatedly put your lives on the line for others! And who inspire little boys like ours to serve others.

7 months...

...and loving it!

We took a drive up to Leland from Traverse City last evening for dinner and some scenery. It was a great night for some seafood chowder and a little walk/photo op.

Football, Messes and Clean-Up

The official beginning of football season. And Gavin has taken a fond liking for the remote just in time. He is his father's son...

This morning's breakfast turned into a messy adventure...

...and led to the first "Big Boy" bath in the real tub. Toys and all! I especially like the picture of him with his hands out like a dragon. He looks like a little sea creature in the tub! And check out those beautiful big eyes!

Showing off his new sitting moves, all by himself for several minutes at a time. 7 months later this week!

Sitting Up

Look, no hands! And no clothes!

In oral news, tooth number two is making an appearance! I reported earlier that Gavin's first tooth was coming in. Well, the sidekick on the bottom right is now cutting through to give him a cute symmetrical look. Thank goodness for frozen teething rings and good ole' acetaminophen.

First Tooth

Surprise, surprise, it's on it's way!

The adorable gummy smile soon will have it's first pearly white (lower left) just in time for a jack-o-lantern Halloween smile. Brad noticed it popping through on Wednesday--sharp little guy. You can't see it in these photos, though I will try to capture it on film (well, digital "film") if I'm able.

Here's our little guy previewing his fall attire, given the chilly weather last weekend. I love him in brown. And if you're familiar with the book Guess How Much I Love You, which is one of our absolute favorites, Gavin makes a great Little Nutbrown. We certainly do "love him all the way to the moon...and back."
